Gardone Riviera is located on the west coast of Lake Garda, about 40 km from Brescia. It is divided into Gardone di Sopra, Gardone Sotto, and its hamlets are: San Michele, Tresnico, Fasano, and Morgnaga. Together with seven other municipalities on the west coast, Gardone is part of the Riviera del Limoni.
The climate is mild year-round, thanks to the natural protection of the hills that enclose the locality.
Gardone became a significant tourist destination in the late 18th century, as influential German tourists and doctors were convinced that the resort and its surroundings exerted great health benefits. The Austrian Louis Wimmer, after a long curative stay in Gardone Riviera, erected the first major hotel in the surrounding area and promoted this image of a curative Gardone throughout Europe.
Gardone is part of the natural park “Parco Alto Garda Bresciano.” The park can be conveniently explored via the trails. Enjoy a few hours in the unique landscape around Gardone.
The beautiful lakefront of Gardone Riviera, in the early morning sun, fills with people and towards evening becomes in the summer months the place to have an ice cream, an aperitif or to go to an elegant restaurant for dinner.
Gardone Riviera boasts several blue flags for its beaches, certifying not only clean water but also services and respect for the environment at sea and lake resorts.
There are two beaches in Gardone that offer tourists all kinds of amenities as well as services and clear, clean water:
The Casino Beach (Gardone Riviera): a free beach that has an area reserved for children’s games, it is possible to rent sunbeds, umbrellas, and deck chairs, and to cheer up its guests the beach offers a beautiful bar.
Lido di Fas ano (Fasano): free beach that provides toilets, changing cabins, showers and bar service.
Il Rimbalzello: with its own private beach, swimming pool and sports center, provides its guests with tennis courts, soccer field, beach volleyball court with lake view, outdoor swimming pool, beach with lake access and canoe rental service.
Around Gardone Riviera there are many localities and attractions that can be reached even with a simple boat trip: Garda Island, Riva, Torri, Malcesine, Salò and its famous Saturday morning market, Valentesi where you can buy Garda Dop Olive Oil and Garda wines, or Maderno with its magnificent lakefront, from here also Navigazione del Garda provides for the transport of cars, buses and motorcycles, two Ferries that shuttle between Toscolano Maderno and Torri del Benaco , this service allows you to avoid the coastal roads that are very crowded in the high season.
Boats and ferries offer numerous destinations to the Lombard, Veneto, and Trentino coasts.
The Andre Heller Botanical Garden is a wonderful place located between Gardone Sotto and Gardone Sopra, created in the early 1900s by Arturo Hruska, an explorer and physician, who brought together here about 2,000 varieties of plants and flowers on the one-hectare area, moved by scenic effects, in a tangle of paths, rocks, and waterfalls.
The most famous place of interest is the Vittoriale degli Italiani in Gardone di Sopra, a monumental complex erected at the behest of Gabriele d’Annunzio starting in 1921. The famous poet, journalist, soldier and patriot from Abruzzo, after staying in Gardone Riviera and falling in love with the panorama of Lake Garda, decided to buy the property on which the Vittoriale stands today and make it a realm of remembrance of his own exceptional life and the Italian people during World War I. The work was entrusted to architect Giancarlo Maroni, a friend of the supreme poet.
Gardens, roads, streets, squares, house, library, waterways, amphitheater: when one arrives at the Vittoriale for the first time, one does not know exactly what to expect, and indeed every corner is a surprise. Every area, outdoor or indoor, conveys the particularity and imaginative persona of d’Annunzio, a house-museum to the nth degree. In addition to what you would never think you would find, scattered throughout the entire complex: the SVA airplane, the military ship Puglia, the MAS 96 submarine, luxurious gardens, the lemon house, the mausoleum (where D’annunzio rests) and the splendid lake-view amphitheater, still the site every summer of major musical events and concerts by great artists.
Villa Alba, originally called “Villa Ruhland,” whose translation “Peace in the Landscape” is explanatory of where this Residence is located. It is a neoclassical building with an imposing appearance and fine architectural details, prominent among them being the imposing staircase, colonnades and loggias, and the large park with tall trees. In the 1970s, it was the municipality of Gardone Riviera that bought Villa Alba, making it the first convention center on Lake Garda, which is still used for exhibitions, conventions, cultural events and private ceremonies.
The Museum of the Divine Infant was founded in Gardone Riviera in 2005 at the behest of Mrs. Hiky Mayr, an educated collector of German origin who for thirty-five years has dedicated herself to researching, collecting, and restoring sculptures depicting the Infant Jesus. It is the only museum in the world with the most relevant and numerous thematic collection in existence. The collection boasts more than two hundred and fifty sculptures from four centuries and documents through the artifacts on display, the techniques, uses, and iconography related to the theme of sculpture with the subject of “Baby Jesus” and in some cases “Baby Mary”
The Garda Bresciano area and the Valtenesi valley offer countless possibilities for professional and recreational mountaibike and bicycle enthusiasts.
The routes wind through and include bike paths, cycle tracks, dirt trails and low-traffic back roads, offering an almost endless number of variations and routes. Below are just a few main routes:
Mount Pizzocolo, which towers above Toscolano Maderno, a locality on the western shore of Lake Garda, is 1582 meters high, reaching a relatively advanced position with respect to the Lake Garda hinterland. It is a privileged vantage point for the entire Lake Garda offering, from its summit, a three hundred and sixty-degree view of Lake Garda, the Alps, Mount Rosa, and the Apennines. Near its summit is a bivouac carved out of a World War I military structure and a small chapel. You can also find the G.Pirlo refuge on Mt. Spino, adjacent to Mt. Pizzoccolo.
The Bassa Via del Garda trail, dedicated to Roberto Montagnoli, is a trail that can be done in any season and is suitable for everyone. In the fall months you will smell the scent of cyclamens while in the summer the scent of jasmine. Beautiful nature envelops anyone walking along the trail, crossing rolling hills and rocky overhangs, walls of old lemon houses and delightful villages to visit.

This steep route offers stupendous views of the lake and allows you to reach St. Michael’s quickly. Starting from the Gardone Riviera Town Hall, turn right in the direction of Vittoriale to Piazza Caduti, go up the “Via Vecchia” toward Visniga fountain, turn right for Tresnico. Go up to the left beside the Church and you will come to St. Michael’s on Calm Street.
Mount San Bartolomeo rises above Salò; it is a modest relief (about 600 meters), around which there is a good trail system that allows for pleasant, not too strenuous walks amidst woods, agricultural hamlets, and with a breathtaking view of the lake below. Some churches erected in peaceful places can also be encountered along the way.
